December 16 is celebrated as Vijay Diwas or Victory Day in India. It was on December 16, 1971 that the Pakistani forces in the then East Pakistan surrendered to end the 1971 December war between the two countries. Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Command accepted the surrender from Gen A A K Niazi. This is a memorable picture.
63 years after the ruler signed an accession treaty to join India, militancy in Kashmir continues to be in the news. Yesterday, separatist leaders from Kashmir took the battle to the capital by having a meeting in Delhi with the agenda of “Azadi -The Only Way”. They want Kashmir to break away from the Indian state.
This news was not new! It confirmed what the people of India- and many others in the world- had known for long. The Pakistan Government had over the years aided and abetted terrorists and militants, pushing them to create chaos in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir.
